The United States today is in the throes of two distinct but interrelated economic crises, a recession and a financial crisis. The latter crisis is potentially the more important one. While recessions typically create the basis for, and give rise to, the next upturn in the economy, the financial crisis could bring the economy crashing down. It calls into question the stability and indeed the very survival of capitalism.
